Sepasang mata Sabai Nan Rancak memandang tak berkesip pada orang bercadar yang tegak di hadapannya. Dia seolah berusaha menembus cadar untuk melihat wajah orang berpakaian serba kuning itu, untuk mengetahui siapa orang ini adanya.
"Siang telah bergerak menuju petang. Terima kasih kau telah sudi datang memenuhi undangan." Si cadar kuning berkata.
Sabai Nan Rancak memasang telinganya baik-baik. Sebelumnya dia telah beberapa kali bertemu dengan orang ini dan telah beberapa kali pula mendengar suaranya. Dalam hati Sabai Nan Rancak berkata. "Aku masih belum bisa memastikan apakah orang ini lelaki atau perempuan. Kalau bicara kata-katanya seperti berpantun. Setiap bicara agaknya dia mengerahkan tenaga dalam untuk menutupi suara aslinya. Namun berat dugaanku dia seorang perempuan."

"Waktuku tidak banyak. Ada beberapa urusan penting menungguku. Jadi kuharap kau segera menjelaskan maksud tujuan pertemuan ini." Kata Sabai Nan Rancak setelah tadi berusaha menyimak suara orang.
